Our Leather

Our Leather

Where our leather comes from and its quality is of the highest importance to us.

We use ethically sourced, vegetable-tanned full-grain leather for all of our items. The hides are mainly sourced from Europe and then tanned and dyed in tanneries in Turkey. We are working with several certified tanneries, one of them is Sepici where they are very famous for their traditional tanning methods.

Depending on item type, the thickness of the leather will vary. In general, we have three different skin types. All of them are full grain and vegetally tanned.

However, each product requires that we choose the right type of leather.

For example, we use 2mm thick leather for journals and traveler’s notebooks. We use thinner leather in products such as thin cases, zippered folios, and notebooks.

For products that can be rolled, we use a softer variety of the thinner leather to avoid potholes.

This explains why we offer different leather types and colors for each of our products.

Leather Types

  • Plain Saddle Leather

Crazy Horse Leather

Crazy horse leather is a full-grain leather that gets better and more beautiful with time and usage.

It has a suede feel and finish. Crazy Horse is a very soft and less processed type of leather. For this reason, scratches may occur on the leather over time and depending on how it is used. This is called patina and is a highly sought-after feature for some leather lovers. If you think these traces of use will make you unhappy, we recommend that you look at polished leather in leather products.

To ease your mind, we wanted to clarify that crazy horse leather does not come from a horse as the name might imply. It is called ‘crazy horse leather’ because it has traditionally been used for horse saddles.

Undyed Leather - Not treated or protected.

Undyed leather means nude leather that is untreated with nothing covered up, meaning it will have natural range marks, scars, and other blemishes. It has not been processed to make it appear perfect, like something you would get in a department store. When you get your brand new undyed vegetable-tanned leather product, it will look natural in color. The hide is effectively naked and it will age and darken with the sun, just like your own skin. Aged, undyed leather, will develop a rich color and patina. Sun exposure, daily handling, water, and conditioning give the leather a natural, rustic look over time.
